Adaptogens, Botanicals & Herbal Supplements: How to Evaluate Them Responsibly
Adaptogens, botanicals, and herbal supplements have become increasingly popular among consumers looking for natural approaches to everyday wellness. From ashwagandha and rhodiola to turmeric, ginger, and other plant-based ingredients, these products are now widely available in supplement stores and online.
For nutrition professionals, however, popularity should not be the primary reason to recommend a botanical supplement.
The more important questions are:
What does the evidence say? Is the product appropriate for this individual? And how can we evaluate its quality and safety?
A responsible approach starts by looking beyond the word “natural.”
Natural Does Not Automatically Mean Safe
One of the most common misconceptions about herbal supplements is that natural ingredients are inherently safe.
They are not.
Botanical ingredients contain biologically active compounds that can affect the body. Their effects—and their potential risks—can depend on the plant species, plant part, preparation method, extract concentration, dosage, and the individual taking the product.
For nutrition professionals, this means that “natural” should be viewed as a description of origin, not a guarantee of safety or effectiveness.
What Are Adaptogens and Botanicals?
The terms botanical, herbal supplement, and adaptogen are often used interchangeably in the wellness industry, but they are not identical.
Botanical supplements generally contain ingredients derived from plants, including herbs, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, or concentrated extracts.
Herbal supplements are a type of dietary supplement containing one or more herbs.
Adaptogens are commonly described in the supplement and wellness industry as botanicals that may help the body respond to physical or psychological stress. However, the scientific evidence varies considerably from one botanical to another.
This distinction matters because a traditional reputation or popular marketing term does not automatically establish clinical effectiveness.

1. Start With the Evidence
Before recommending a botanical, ask a simple question:
What evidence supports its intended use?
Evidence can come from different sources, including:
- Traditional use
- Laboratory research
- Animal studies
- Observational studies
- Human clinical trials
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
These types of evidence do not carry the same weight.
Human clinical research generally provides more direct information about how a botanical supplement may affect people than laboratory or animal research. Even then, results can vary depending on the extract, dosage, population, and study design.
A useful principle is:
Evaluate the evidence for the specific ingredient, preparation, dose, and intended use—not simply for the plant itself.
2. Look at the Extract, Not Just the Plant Name
Two products containing the same botanical may not necessarily be equivalent.
A botanical can be prepared as:
- Tea
- Powder
- Tincture
- Standardized extract
- Concentrated extract
- Liquid extract
The concentration of active constituents can differ significantly between preparations. NIH notes that the form and dose of a botanical are important factors when considering safety and potential effects.
For this reason, a label that simply says “Ashwagandha” or “Rhodiola” does not tell the entire story.
Nutrition professionals should also look for information about the plant species, plant part, extract ratio or standardization where relevant, amount per serving, and other formulation details.

3. Consider Dosage and Duration
More is not necessarily better.
A botanical that has been studied at a particular dose cannot automatically be assumed to produce greater benefits at a much higher dose.
Dosage also matters when comparing research studies with commercial products. A clinical trial may use a specific extract and dosage that is very different from the product available to consumers.
When reviewing evidence, ask:
Is the product being recommended reasonably comparable to the preparation and dosage used in the research?
This question can prevent one of the most common mistakes in supplement evaluation: applying evidence from one formulation to a completely different product.
4. Check for Potential Interactions
Herbal supplements can interact with prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, and other supplements.
For example, St. John’s wort is well known for its potential to interact with numerous medications. More broadly, NCCIH identifies drug interactions, direct toxicities, and contamination as important safety considerations for herbal and dietary supplements.
Before recommending a botanical, consider whether the individual:
- Takes prescription medications
- Uses multiple supplements
- Has a chronic health condition
- Is preparing for surgery
- Is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Belongs to another population for which evidence may be limited
When uncertainty exists, collaboration with the individual's physician, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare professional can be important.
5. Evaluate Product Quality
Even when an ingredient has promising research behind it, the finished product still matters.
Nutrition professionals should consider:
- Ingredient identity
- Amount per serving
- Extract specifications
- Manufacturing quality
- Testing procedures
- Potential contaminants
- Label transparency
- Storage and stability
Third-party quality testing can provide additional information about manufacturing and product contents, although a quality seal should not be interpreted as proof that a supplement is clinically effective or appropriate for everyone.
The goal is not simply to find a product that looks “natural.”
The goal is to identify a product with appropriate formulation, quality controls, transparency, and a reasonable evidence base.
6. Separate Traditional Use From Clinical Evidence
Traditional use can be valuable when researching botanicals. Many plants have long histories of use across different cultures.
But traditional use and clinical evidence answer different questions.
Traditional knowledge can help researchers identify potentially useful plants and compounds. Clinical research helps determine whether a particular preparation produces measurable effects under defined conditions.
A responsible nutrition professional can respect traditional knowledge while still asking:
Has this specific use been adequately studied in humans?
This approach avoids both extremes: dismissing traditional knowledge completely or treating tradition as proof of clinical effectiveness.
7. Be Careful With Marketing Claims
Another important consideration is how botanical supplements are described to consumers.
A product may contain an interesting ingredient, but that does not mean every health claim associated with that ingredient is scientifically justified.
In the United States, FDA distinguishes among health claims, nutrient content claims, and structure/function claims for dietary supplements. Claims also need appropriate substantiation and must not be misleading.
For nutrition professionals developing or recommending products, this means the language surrounding a botanical is just as important as the ingredient itself.
Avoid turning preliminary research into promises.
Instead of presenting an ingredient as a guaranteed solution, communicate what is known, what is uncertain, and where additional research is needed.
A Practical Checklist for Nutrition Professionals
Before recommending an adaptogen, botanical, or herbal supplement, consider these questions:
1. What is the intended purpose?
Is there a clear nutritional or wellness rationale?
2. What does human research show?
Look beyond laboratory or animal studies.
3. Is the product comparable to the research?
Check the form, extract, dosage, and formulation.
4. Is it appropriate for this individual?
Consider medications, health conditions, pregnancy, surgery, and other relevant factors.
5. Can the product quality be evaluated?
Look for transparency, manufacturing controls, and appropriate testing.
6. Are the claims responsible?
Make sure marketing language does not go beyond the available evidence.
From “Natural” to Evidence-Informed
Botanicals and herbal supplements can be valuable areas of nutrition education, but responsible use requires more than recognizing popular ingredients.
For nutrition professionals, the best approach is to combine scientific evidence, product quality, appropriate dosing, individual context, and clear communication.
The question should not simply be:
“Is this botanical natural?”
A better question is:
“Is this specific botanical preparation appropriate, evidence-informed, and responsibly formulated for this particular person?”
That shift—from natural to evidence-informed—can help nutrition professionals make more thoughtful supplement recommendations and help consumers navigate an increasingly crowded botanical supplement market.
