Science Facts

Fiber and Prebiotics: Mechanisms and Health Benefits

This comprehensive review examines how dietary fibers and prebiotics — including polydextrose — benefit human health through gut fermentation and microbiota modulation. It documents that polydextrose consumption produces a dose-dependent increase in beneficial Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, while also being one of the most gastrointestinally well-tolerated fibers available (consumed at up to 50g/day without symptoms). The review also highlights polydextrose's classification as a functional fiber with bifidogenic properties, supporting its role in gut and immune health.

Polydextrose-Inulin Blends: Gas Production and Bifidogenic Effects

This gut fermentation study using fecal inocula from 15 healthy volunteers evaluated how polydextrose and its blends with inulin affect the gut microbiome and metabolic output. Polydextrose was found to significantly boost production of butyrate and propionate — two SCFAs linked to appetite regulation, blood sugar control, and colon health — due to its slow, distal-colon fermentation pattern. Blending polydextrose with inulin reduced gas production while preserving strong bifidogenic (Bifidobacterium-boosting) capacity, suggesting a synergistic benefit.

Dietary Fibers and Probiotics for Functional Constipation

This 4-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 250 adults with functional constipation tested polydextrose (with oligosaccharides) against psyllium husk, wheat bran, and a probiotic formula. All four active interventions significantly improved stool consistency (Bristol Stool Scale), while placebo did not show significant change. The polydextrose group specifically showed increased Bifidobacterium abundance at weeks 2 and 4, alongside decreases in inflammation-associated gut genera — providing direct human trial evidence for its prebiotic and laxative benefits.

Probiotics (incl. B. lactis) for Glycemic & Immune Control in Type 1 Diabetes

This 6-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 56 young patients with Type 1 Diabetes tested a probiotic combination including B. lactis subsp. AP-32 as an adjunct to insulin therapy. The probiotic group showed significantly reduced fasting blood glucose and HbA1c, alongside meaningful decreases in pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-8, IL-17) and a large increase in the anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-β1. Notably, these glycemic and immune benefits persisted for 3 months after stopping the probiotic, suggesting durable changes to the gut-immune axis.
